How UK Trans Parents Are Stuck in Legal Limbo

Freddy McConnell investigates access to fertility and pregnancy care for trans folks in the UK, the need for trans parents to be accurately affirmed in healthcare and on official documents, and the joy of starting a family despite the obstacles.

This episode was filmed in 2022. The overall picture for trans people in the UK remains the same.

Since filming, Katie and Chris have welcomed their child and are doing well. They plan to pursue fresh legal action, to help secure legal recognition and protection for families like theirs.

Freddy’s court case is ongoing, despite a negative ruling by the European Court of Human Rights in April 2023. This decision dashes hopes of pan-European trans parental recognition. However, progress is being made for families in individual countries, like Sweden, Iceland, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands and Israel.
